The first developer preview of Android 15 gives a sneak peek at the upcoming Android operating system. First off there’s a new Easter egg and it’s similar to the recently released Android 14 QPR3 beta 1, yes, a triangle-shaped Vanilla Ice Cream logo is the new easter egg for Android 15. The Android OS expert, Mishaal Rahman, shared a deep-dive thread detailing all changes available on the Android 15’s DP1. He confirms that the OS adopts the Android 14 QPR2’s Bluetooth Quick Setting dialog that lets users quickly switch between paired devices without entering the Bluetooth settings. For better visibility, there’s a new Camera2 API that lets apps boost the brightness of the camera preview. Google adds support for partial screen sharing which lets users share or record the app’s window rather than the entire screen of the device. Advanced flash strength adjustments is another change coming to the camera that lets you adjust torch brightness while capturing images. For haptics, Google added a new toggle for keyboard vibrations, you can turn it on by moving to Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics and turn the toggle on for keyboard vibrations under interactive vibrations settings. Apart from that, Android 15 gets haptics feedback for brightness slider in the Quick Settings. Google adds a pretty useful feature, dubbed, Notification cooldown. With this feature, if you receive successive notifications from the same app, the notification volume gradually decreases. For foldable phones, the ability to continue using apps on the fold was dropped in Android 14 QPR1. However, this feature is making a comeback with Android 15’s DP1. Apart from that, the update brings Swipe up to continue for Pixel fold, you can swipe up on the front display to continue using the app or wait a few seconds for screen lock. Moving to the other changes, then the first developer preview includes the latest version of Android AD Services up to extension level 10, alongside the latest version of Privacy Sandbox. Android 15 boasts the SDK extension version 10 for Health Connect by Android, adding support for new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more. Android 15 developer preview gets Universal MIDI Packages (UMP) support for virtual MIDI apps, enabling composition apps to control synthesizer apps as a virtual MIDI 2.0 device just like they would with an USB MIDI 2.0 device.

Android 15 Launch Date
Google has officially shared the release timeline for the next version of Android OS, Android 15. The current timeline reveals the first public beta release is scheduled for April. The second beta release is scheduled for May at Google’s annual developer conference event, Google I/O. Platform Stability betas are expected to be released in June with the third beta. While the exact release date for the final version is not specified, it is expected to be released alongside the Pixel 9 smartphones in October.
How to Install the Beta
As of right now, Android 15 is available for developers, if you are a developer you can manually install the developer preview on your eligible Pixel device. Do note that the bootloader unlocking is a must for installing the Android 15 DP1, installing the update will also vanish all data, so make sure to take a backup before installing the update. If you are a regular user, I suggest you not install the update on your Pixel smartphone, you can wait at least for the first public beta.
